After Brett passed away, it seemed to me that God was giving me signs that he was saved (for which I am so grateful). I asked a priest, whom I knew was faithful to the Magisterium of the Church, if I could count on this. His answer I have never forgotten. I was discussing Penance, purgatory, and indulgences (among many other topics) with a friend, and the topic of temporal punishment came up. Temporal punishment happens to be closely linked to indulgences, which happen to be linked to the effects of Sacramental Penance, so it was only natural that it be next in line for discussion.
Six Reasons We Have to Carry Our Crosses
"If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me" (Matthew 16:24).
When Jesus uses the word “cross” he is referring to suffering as an “instrument of salvation.” This makes sense in reference to his suffering and death but many Christians wonder, isn’t what Jesus did enough? Why do we have to carry our crosses?
